The Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards bestowed in a number of categories by Swedish and Norwegian committees in recognition of cultural and/or scientific advances. The will of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel established the prizes in 1895. The prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace were first awarded in 1901. The related Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was created in 1968. The Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway, while the other prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award available in the fields of literature, medicine, physics, chemistry, peace, and economics.

Nobel Prize Winners of Indian born and Indian Citizen:

1) Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941):
·         He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for "Gitanjali" in 1913
·         He founded “Shantiniketan”, which later became Viswa Bharati University.
·         Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to win Nobel Prize.
·         Tagore wrote and composed the national anthem too.

2) Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (7 November 1888 – 21 November 1970):
·         Dr. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman won  the Nobel Prize for Physics for his "RAMAN" effect in 1930.
·         Every year on 28 February National science day is celebrated to commemorate the discovery of Raman effect.

·         He was the founder of Raman research institute in Bangalore.

3) Amartya Sen (3 November 1933)
·         He won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1998 for his work in Welfare economics, famine, economic and social justice.

1) Abdus Salam (January 29, 1926– November 21, 1996)
·         Abdus Salam born in undivided Punjab and a citizen of Pakistan.
·         He won Nobel Prize for Physics in 1979, for his work on electroweak unification, one of the important puzzles of modern theoretical physics.

2) HarGobind Khorana (January 9, 1922)
·         Dr. Hargobind Khorana was born in Raipur, Punjab (now in Pakistan).

3) Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (October 19, 1910 – August 21, 1995)
·         Subramaniam Chandrashekhar was born in Lahore, India (now part of Pakistan). He is the nephew of another Nobel winner, C. V. Raman.
·         He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983 for his work on stars and their evolution.

4) Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Born 1952)
·         He won Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2009 for studies of the structure and function of the ribosomes.
·         He is now a U.S. citizen.

Padma Vibhushan (2010)

5) V. S. Naipaul (Born 17 August 1932)
·         A British writer of Indian origin who was born in Trinidad, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001.

Booker Prize (1971)

1) Ronald Ross (13 May 1857 – 16 September 1932)
·         He won Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 1902 for his notable work on Malaria.
·         He born in Almora, Uttarakhand.

2) Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936)
·         A British Poet has been awarded Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907for his works in Literature such as Poems and Short Stories related to India and Burma/ Myanmar.
·         He born in Mumbai, Maharastra.

Nobel Prize Winners : Foreign born Indian citizens:

1) Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997)
·         Mother Teresa was Roman Catholic Nun born in Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu  and later became Indian citizen.
·         She is known for her work for the benefits of poor, sick, orphaned and other needy peoples.
·         She won Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her service through her Charitable Mission “Nirmal Hriday” at Calcutta to people suffering from Leprosy and to those people dying in destitute.
·         She won Bharat Ratna in 1980
